Internal wall insulation · Lichfield
Internal wall insulation in Lichfield.
Lichfield's historic centre has hundreds of listed buildings and many Georgian houses, so insulating old walls here needs care as well as warmth. I use breathable systems with lime where the building calls for it, and every job starts with a free home visit.

Can you insulate a listed or Georgian house in Lichfield?
Often, yes, but with consent and the right materials. Internal alterations to a listed building need listed building consent from Lichfield District Council first. For old solid walls I usually recommend vapour-open insulation such as wood fibre or cork finished with lime, which keeps the wall able to dry out.
What makes Lichfield homes different to insulate?
Age and heritage. The Lichfield City Centre Conservation Area, first designated in 1970, contains over 200 listed buildings, and a high proportion of the centre is Georgian in style, sometimes with older buildings behind the frontages.
Beyond the centre there are Victorian terraces and villas, interwar semis and large later estates. The older homes have solid walls, often with lime mortar and, in some cases, original lime plaster. Those materials handle moisture differently from modern brick and gypsum, and the insulation has to respect that.
Why do you prefer breathable insulation for old Lichfield walls?
Because traditional walls stay healthy by drying out. Government guidance on internal wall insulation generally favours a moisture-open approach for traditional solid walls, so any moisture that gets in has a way to leave.
- Wood fibre boards: good insulation and moisture buffering.
- Cork boards or cork plaster: useful on uneven or curved surfaces.
- Lime adhesive, base coat and finish: the whole build-up works together, not just the board.
Moisture modelling at the survey helps set a safe thickness. You can see a real example in my case study and read more about lime plastering.

What does moisture modelling tell you about an old wall?
It shows whether a proposed build-up is likely to stay dry over the years. Adding insulation inside makes the brick behind it colder, so moisture behaves differently. Modelling checks that change before it happens.
I look at several things on site and feed them into the design:
- The wall's thickness, materials and existing finishes, including any lime plaster worth keeping.
- Which way the wall faces and how exposed it is to wind-driven rain.
- The condition of pointing, render, gutters and downpipes.
- How the room is used and how well it is ventilated.
The result guides the material and the thickness. Thicker is not always better: on some walls a modest layer gives most of the comfort benefit with far less risk. In my case study, the main wall took 40mm of wood fibre while the adjoining wall took 25mm, for exactly that kind of reason.
For historic Lichfield houses, this is the difference between insulation that helps the building and insulation that quietly harms it.
Do I need permission to insulate inside my Lichfield home?
It depends on whether your home is listed.
| Your home | Planning permission | Other consent |
|---|---|---|
| Not listed, outside a conservation area | Not normally needed | Building Regulations may apply to large wall renovations |
| Not listed, in a conservation area | Not normally needed for internal work | As above |
| Listed building | Not usually for internal work | Listed building consent required first |
For listed homes, consent comes before any work. I can explain the proposed build-up clearly so you can discuss it with the council's conservation team.
Will insulation spoil the character of my room?
It shouldn't. Shutter boxes, panelled reveals, cornices, dado rails and deep skirtings are part of why people love these houses. I plan around them: stopping insulation below a cornice, reinstating original skirting and detailing window reveals so they still look right.
Sometimes the honest answer is that a particular wall is better left alone, or treated with a thinner insulating lime or cork plaster. I will say so if that is the case.

Do you only work on historic homes in Lichfield?
No. Lichfield also has plenty of interwar semis and later homes, and their owners call me about cold bays, cold bedrooms and mould just as often.
Many of those houses have cavity walls, so internal insulation may not be the first answer. A cold bay panel or a mouldy corner can still be improved. I will look at the house and tell you what is worth doing, including when the right step is something other than insulation. See condensation and black mould for that side of the work.
How far do you travel to Lichfield?
Lichfield is usually around 25 to 30 minutes from my base in Walsall. I also cover Burntwood, Shenstone, Whittington and nearby villages. The process is the same everywhere: listen, inspect, model, quote in writing, then careful work and a room handed back ready to decorate.
For period homes I allow extra time at the survey. Looking at the wall, its finishes and its surroundings properly is what makes the recommendation trustworthy, and in a historic house that matters more than speed. You also receive an aftercare and maintenance plan explaining which paints and repairs suit the new wall.

“We had insulation done in our main bedroom, outside wall including bay. From his initial visit, to quotation process and actually doing the work, he was very efficient. It was a pleasure to have Wojtek working in our house.”
“We had our house insulated recently and the difference is honestly amazing. Before, it used to take forever to warm the house up, we’d got to the point where we were even talking about selling because it was just that cold.”
“We’d had black mould forming on our bay window for years and had almost given up trying to clean it off. Nothing we tried ever worked. Then we came across Wojtek at aPlastering.”
“We recently had two rooms insulated by aPlastering, and honestly, they were brilliant from start to finish. They explained everything clearly, the communication was great, and the price was straightforward with no surprises.”
“Our experience with aPlastering was exceptional from start to finish. Wojciech did a thorough survey prior to providing a quote and was crystal clear on what was required. The price was fair for the work required.”
“A very professional and reliable service throughout. From initial enquiry to completion, communication was prompt, with a clear quotation and timeline provided.”
“Excellent professional service, great time keeping, and perfect job. I had insulated plasterboard fitted, soundproof plasterboard and all skimming to a large ground floor, excellent finish throughout and more importantly 3 years in and no cracks.”
“We were let down last minute and he came out to provide a quote the very same day and had our bedroom beautifully plastered the following day, all to an incredibly high standard.”

Only once listed building consent has been granted. Internal alterations to a listed building need consent, and carrying out work without it is an offence. I can describe the proposed system, materials and thickness so the conservation team can assess it. Breathable, reversible build-ups are more likely to be acceptable.
Is lime plaster necessary with wood fibre insulation?
Not always, but it usually suits. Wood fibre systems are designed to work with vapour-open plasters, and lime fits well on traditional walls. A gypsum finish or plastic-based paint could undermine the moisture behaviour of the whole system, so I specify the adhesive, plaster and paint together.
My Georgian house has uneven walls. Is that a problem?
Not usually. Old walls are rarely flat or square. Flexible boards, levelling coats and cork plaster help follow the wall without forcing it straight. Uneven walls take a little longer to prepare, and that is reflected in the quote rather than cut short on site.
How much does internal wall insulation cost in Lichfield?
As a guide, it starts from about £2,000 per wall, with breathable systems typically around £3,000 per wall. Tall ceilings, deep reveals and period features add time, so period homes often sit above the guide. I give a detailed written quote after the free home visit.
Do you cover newer homes in Lichfield too?
Yes. Interwar semis and later homes around the city also have cold bays, cold rooms and mould. Newer houses usually have cavity walls, so internal insulation may not be the first step. I tell you honestly what makes sense for your house after looking at it.
