Internal wall insulation · Solihull
Internal wall insulation in Solihull.
Solihull has streets of 1930s bay-fronted semis and pockets of fine Victorian and Edwardian houses, and both can feel cold in winter for different reasons. I travel over for a free home visit and design the insulation around your walls, not a standard kit.

Can you insulate a 1930s semi in Solihull from the inside?
Yes, if the survey shows it suits the wall. Many 1930s semis in Olton and Shirley have cold bays and some have solid walls. Internal insulation adds a layer to the inside face, making the room warmer to the touch. The system and thickness are chosen after checking damp, construction and ventilation.
What kind of homes do you work on in Solihull?
Mostly two types. Olton, Shirley and other suburbs have many 1930s semis, often with bay windows, generous rooms and long gardens. Olton also has Victorian and Edwardian houses from when the railway turned it into a commuter suburb.
Solihull town centre and Knowle were the borough's first conservation areas, and there are others, so some period homes need extra care. Each type gets cold in its own way, which is why I start by looking rather than quoting over the phone.
Why does my Solihull semi feel cold even with new windows?
New glazing helps, but the wall around it may still be the weak point. In many 1930s semis the panel beneath the bay is a thin timber and tile construction with little insulation. Some main walls are solid brick with no cavity.
Cold walls also pull heat from your body, so a room can feel chilly even when the thermostat says it is warm. Warming the wall surface is what changes how the room feels.
For a single bay, my bay window insulation service starts from about £1,700. For full walls, see internal wall insulation.

What difference does internal insulation actually make?
Mainly, the wall stops feeling cold. In one 1930s bedroom I insulated, with 225mm solid brick, 40mm of wood fibre cut the calculated heat loss through the main wall by about 71%.
The inside surface temperature changes too. On a 0°C day with the room at 20°C, the calculated wall surface temperature rose from about 14.5°C to about 18.4°C. A warmer surface means less radiant heat pulled from your body, which is why rooms feel comfortable at the same thermostat setting.
Those figures are for heat loss through that wall, not your whole energy bill, which depends on the rest of the house and how you heat it. The homeowner's description was simpler: the room warms up quicker and holds its warmth longer.
The full details are in the case study.

How do you insulate a Victorian or Edwardian house in Solihull?
Carefully, and usually with a breathable system. Period solid walls rely on drying out, so I generally prefer wood fibre or cork finished with lime, in line with government guidance on internal wall insulation for traditional buildings.
- Cornices, picture rails and deep skirtings are recorded and protected or reinstated.
- Tall walls and deep window reveals take more time, which is reflected in the quote.
- Where a house is listed, listed building consent is needed before work starts.
The Victorian home insulation guide and my lime plastering page explain the approach in more depth.

Do I need planning permission for internal wall insulation in Solihull?
Normally not. Internal insulation changes nothing outside, so it does not usually need planning permission, even within one of Solihull's conservation areas. Listed buildings need listed building consent for internal work. Building Regulations can apply when a large part of an external wall is renovated, and I will explain whether that affects your project.
External wall insulation is a different matter. It changes the look of the house, is more likely to need permission in a conservation area, and is awkward on a semi when the neighbour is not insulating their half. That is one reason internal insulation suits so many Solihull homes.
What will happen to my decorated room during the work?
It will be protected and kept as tidy as the work allows. Many Solihull homes I visit are well decorated, with fitted carpets and furniture chosen carefully, so this is often the first question.
- Floors and furniture are covered before anything starts, and we clean up every day.
- Only the room being insulated is affected; the rest of the house carries on as normal.
- If you want, I organise the electrician, plumber, joiner and waste removal.
The room comes back smooth and ready to decorate. I do not decorate myself, but you will know exactly when the plaster is dry enough for your decorator.

Solihull is a drive from Walsall. How does that work?
Solihull is at the further edge of my area, usually 40 to 50 minutes via the M6, depending on traffic. I plan visits in advance and group survey days, so you get a proper look at your home without rushing.
Once work starts, the same standards apply: floors and furniture protected, tidy every day, a handover inspection and a call about four weeks later. You can follow each stage on the how it works page.

“We had insulation done in our main bedroom, outside wall including bay. From his initial visit, to quotation process and actually doing the work, he was very efficient. It was a pleasure to have Wojtek working in our house.”
“We had our house insulated recently and the difference is honestly amazing. Before, it used to take forever to warm the house up, we’d got to the point where we were even talking about selling because it was just that cold.”
“We’d had black mould forming on our bay window for years and had almost given up trying to clean it off. Nothing we tried ever worked. Then we came across Wojtek at aPlastering.”
“We recently had two rooms insulated by aPlastering, and honestly, they were brilliant from start to finish. They explained everything clearly, the communication was great, and the price was straightforward with no surprises.”
“Our experience with aPlastering was exceptional from start to finish. Wojciech did a thorough survey prior to providing a quote and was crystal clear on what was required. The price was fair for the work required.”
“A very professional and reliable service throughout. From initial enquiry to completion, communication was prompt, with a clear quotation and timeline provided.”
“Excellent professional service, great time keeping, and perfect job. I had insulated plasterboard fitted, soundproof plasterboard and all skimming to a large ground floor, excellent finish throughout and more importantly 3 years in and no cracks.”
“We were let down last minute and he came out to provide a quote the very same day and had our bedroom beautifully plastered the following day, all to an incredibly high standard.”

Yes. Solihull is within my working area, roughly 40 to 50 minutes away. I cover Olton, Shirley, Knowle, Dorridge, Marston Green and nearby areas. Surveys are booked in advance, and during a job the travel time is built into the schedule, not added as a surprise.
How much is internal wall insulation in Solihull?
Prices start from about £2,000 per wall. Breathable systems are typically around £3,000 per wall and take about five days; PIR is usually £2,000 to £3,000 over three to four days. Tall period walls and complex bays can cost more. You get a written quote after the free home visit.
Will I lose my cornice or picture rail?
Not if we plan for it. Where possible, insulation stops below a cornice and the detail is protected, or original features are carefully removed and reinstated. Sometimes a matching profile is the practical answer. We agree this before work starts, because period details are part of why people love these houses.
Is internal or external insulation better for my Solihull home?
It depends. External insulation keeps room sizes and treats the whole wall, but it changes the look of the house and is harder in conservation areas or on semis where the neighbour is not doing theirs. Internal insulation can be done room by room. I explain both honestly at the visit.
Can you work on one room at a time?
Yes. Many Solihull homeowners start with the coldest bedroom or a bay-fronted lounge. Room by room spreads the cost and keeps disruption limited, although I recommend insulating the whole house, including the loft and floors, in the near future. I design each room so that later rooms join up properly, with junctions detailed to avoid cold spots between insulated and uninsulated walls.
