What is spray cork?

Spray cork is a coating made from cork granules mixed with water-based binders. It is sprayed or trowelled onto a prepared surface in thin layers to form a continuous, textured or smooth finish. It is flexible, lets water vapour pass through and resists weather, so it is used on render, internal walls and roofs.

What is spray cork, and how is it different from paint or render?

Spray cork is a thin, flexible coating made mostly of cork granules held in a binder. Paint only colours a surface and traditional render is a rigid layer of sand and cement or lime; spray cork sits between the two, building a continuous skin of a few millimetres that can move slightly with the wall.

Cork comes from the bark of the cork oak, which is stripped by hand every nine years or so without felling the tree. The granules trap tiny pockets of air, which is why cork is light, springy and a poor conductor of heat.

In the UK the systems I use come through SprayCork UK, including the ReveCork range, which is available in different texture grades so the finish can suit the house. As an approved applicator I follow the supplier's preparation and application method, because the coating is only as good as the surface underneath it.

Where can spray cork be used?

Spray cork has four main uses on homes and buildings around Sutton Coldfield and Walsall. Each one solves a different problem, so each has its own page with the detail.

  • Inside cold walls. Internal cork coating is a trowelled cork plaster that takes the chill off cold wall surfaces and can be finished smooth, ready to decorate.
  • Outside, over tired render. External cork coating refreshes cracked, patchy or faded render with one even colour and texture.
  • On roofs. Cork roof coating gives ageing roofs, including metal workshop and agricultural roofs, a continuous protective finish.
  • Over sound asbestos cement. Asbestos encapsulation seals asbestos cement sheets that a survey has confirmed can safely stay in place.

What they share is the material. What differs is the preparation, the thickness, the finish and the questions I need to answer before I recommend it.

What are the real benefits of spray cork?

The honest benefits are flexibility, breathability, weather resistance and a finish that ties a building together. It is not a miracle insulation, and I won't sell it as one.

  • Flexibility. The coating can take normal small movements in a wall, which helps stop fine hairline cracks from reappearing. It will not hide structural movement, so the cause of bigger cracks gets looked at first.
  • Breathability. Cork coatings let water vapour pass through. That matters on older solid walls that need to dry out, although the whole wall build-up still decides how well it dries.
  • Weather resistance. The external system is designed for rain, sunlight and changing temperatures, and the supplier states the colour holds rather than fading quickly.
  • A warmer surface. Cork slows heat moving through it. A few millimetres won't match an insulation board, but it can make a cold surface feel less cold.
  • Less repainting. Durability is the main appeal for people tired of redecorating the same walls every few years.
  • A natural, renewable base material. The cork itself is harvested without cutting down trees.

Is spray cork suitable for my house?

It depends on the surface under it and the reason you are looking. Spray cork suits a sound surface with a problem it can actually fix.

Usually a good fit

  • Render that looks tired, patchy or has fine cracks but is still firmly attached
  • Mildly cold internal walls where you don't want to lose room space
  • Older solid walls that need a vapour-open finish
  • Roofs that are worn but still serviceable

Needs something else first

  • Hollow, loose or blown render, which needs repair or removal
  • Penetrating damp from gutters, pointing or leaks, which needs fixing at source
  • Walls so cold that only real insulation will make the room comfortable
  • Asbestos that is damaged or will be disturbed, which is a job for asbestos specialists

If your home falls into the second list, I will say so and explain the better route.

How is spray cork applied?

Spray cork goes on in thin coats over a clean, sound, properly prepared surface, and most of the skill is in the preparation. The spraying itself is the quickest part of the job.

  1. Protect. Windows, doors, floors, plants and anything nearby are masked and covered. Overspray is fine, so this takes time and care.
  2. Repair. Loose or hollow render is cut out and made good, cracks are opened and filled to suit their cause, and any damp source is dealt with first.
  3. Clean and prime. Dirt, algae and flaky paint are removed and the surface is primed to the supplier's specification.
  4. Coat. The cork is applied in at least two layers, with drying time between them, to reach the specified thickness.
  5. Finish and check. Edges, trims and junctions are detailed, masking is removed and we look over the work together.

Spray cork needs dry weather and sensible temperatures to cure properly, so external work is planned around the forecast. I would rather move a start date than rush a coating onto a damp wall.

How much does spray cork cost?

Spray cork is priced after a free home visit, because the cost depends far more on preparation and access than on the coating itself.

The main things that change the price are:

  • the area to be coated and how many openings, corners and reveals it has
  • how much render repair, cleaning or crack treatment is needed first
  • access, such as scaffolding for a two-storey house or edge protection on a roof
  • the texture grade, colour and number of coats
  • for internal work, whether it is a finish on its own or part of a full insulation system

Your written quote lists each part, so you can see what is preparation, what is coating and what is access.

Is spray cork breathable?

Yes. Cork coatings let water vapour pass through, which is why they are often chosen for older solid walls that need to dry. The coating alone does not decide how a wall behaves though: the paint, plaster and other layers all matter. I check the complete build-up so the wall can still dry out after the work.

How long does spray cork last?

Properly applied on a sound surface, it is designed to last many years with little maintenance. The supplier states a 15-year guarantee on the external coating system. The exact guarantee for your job, and what it covers, is set out in your written quote so there is no confusion later.

Can spray cork go over existing render or paint?

Often, yes, as long as the render and paint are sound and properly prepared. Loose, hollow or crumbling areas have to be repaired or removed first, and cracks need their cause assessed. Keeping sound render is one of the reasons cork refurbishment can make more sense than stripping a wall back to brick.

Will spray cork stop mould?

It can help where a slightly cold surface is part of the cause, because it raises the surface temperature a little. Mould also needs moisture, so ventilation and the source of dampness matter just as much. For badly affected rooms I usually look at full internal wall insulation alongside better ventilation.

Does spray cork reduce heating bills?

Only modestly on its own, because the layer is thin. Any saving depends on the wall, the area treated and how the home is heated. If lower bills and a warmer room are your main goals, internal wall insulation will make a much bigger difference, and I will show you why at the survey.

What colours and finishes are available?

The external range comes in different texture grades, from finer to coarser, and a wide choice of colours. Internally, cork plaster can be left with a natural texture or finished with a smooth skim so the room looks like any decorated wall. I bring samples to discuss once we know cork suits the job.

Do you cover my area?
