What is the safest way to insulate a Victorian wall in Handsworth?
Usually a breathable system: wood fibre insulation finished in lime plaster. Victorian solid walls were built with lime mortar and are designed to take in and release moisture. A breathable build-up lets that continue, so the wall stays dry. Impermeable materials on a damp wall can trap moisture behind them.
What are Handsworth's older houses built like?
Most of the Victorian housing has solid brick walls, often around 225mm in terraces and thicker in larger villas, laid in lime mortar. Many villas have tall ceilings, sash windows, decorative cornices and suspended timber ground floors. Terraces typically have a front bay and a back addition with the kitchen and bathroom.
These houses have survived well for well over a century. The problems I see usually come from later changes, not the original build.
Why is my Victorian wall damp when it was fine for a hundred years?
Often because of something added later. These are the usual suspects:
| Change | What it does |
|---|---|
| Cement repointing on soft brick | Traps moisture in the brick and can damage the face |
| Cement render or modern paints outside | Slows drying, so the wall stays wet |
| Gypsum plaster and vinyl paint inside | Stops the wall releasing moisture into the room |
| Blocked air bricks or raised ground levels | Damp at the base of the wall and under timber floors |
Many people are then told they need a new damp proof course. Sometimes that is right, often it is not. The guide for people told they need a damp proof course explains how to tell the difference.
Which insulation do you use on Handsworth villas?
On old lime-built walls, my default is wood fibre boards with a lime finish. It costs around £3,000 per wall and takes about five days, depending on the room. It is thicker than PIR, but it handles moisture far better and suits the character of the house.
PIR fixed with PU adhesive, usually £2,300 to £3,000 per wall over three to four days, can work on a sound, dry wall, but I only recommend it after a moisture check. The comparison of insulation systems and the Victorian home insulation guide explain the reasoning.

Can you keep the sash windows and original features?
Yes. Internal insulation changes the inside face of the wall, so I plan around reveals, shutters, window boards, cornices and skirtings. Sash windows stay in place, and the reveals are insulated with a thinner board so the sashes still work and the shutters, if you have them, can still close where possible.
Where old lime plaster is in good condition on internal walls, it can stay. Where outside walls are being insulated, I finish in lime to match. My lime plastering service covers repairs as well.

Is my Handsworth house in a conservation area?
It may be. Parts of Handsworth are covered by conservation areas, and some buildings are listed. Internal insulation does not normally need planning permission because the outside is unchanged, but listed buildings need listed building consent for internal work. If you are not sure, it is worth checking with Birmingham City Council, and I will flag anything I notice at the visit.
Which room should I start with?
The one that bothers you most, usually a front bedroom with tall solid walls or the back addition where mould starts. In a large villa, the corner rooms with two outside walls are often the worst. Room by room is possible, though I recommend planning the whole house so each stage fits.
If you have a bay, the Birmingham bay window insulation page explains how brick Victorian bays differ from the lightweight bays of 1930s semis.
Do you work in Handsworth and nearby?
Yes. Handsworth is usually 25 to 30 minutes from Bloxwich. I also cover Perry Barr, Great Barr and the rest of Birmingham. Each job follows the same process: free home visit, written quotation, pre-start guide and a follow-up call about four weeks after the work.

“We had insulation done in our main bedroom, outside wall including bay. From his initial visit, to quotation process and actually doing the work, he was very efficient. It was a pleasure to have Wojtek working in our house.”
“We had our house insulated recently and the difference is honestly amazing. Before, it used to take forever to warm the house up, we’d got to the point where we were even talking about selling because it was just that cold.”
“We’d had black mould forming on our bay window for years and had almost given up trying to clean it off. Nothing we tried ever worked. Then we came across Wojtek at aPlastering.”
“We recently had two rooms insulated by aPlastering, and honestly, they were brilliant from start to finish. They explained everything clearly, the communication was great, and the price was straightforward with no surprises.”
“Our experience with aPlastering was exceptional from start to finish. Wojciech did a thorough survey prior to providing a quote and was crystal clear on what was required. The price was fair for the work required.”
“A very professional and reliable service throughout. From initial enquiry to completion, communication was prompt, with a clear quotation and timeline provided.”
“Excellent professional service, great time keeping, and perfect job. I had insulated plasterboard fitted, soundproof plasterboard and all skimming to a large ground floor, excellent finish throughout and more importantly 3 years in and no cracks.”
“We were let down last minute and he came out to provide a quote the very same day and had our bedroom beautifully plastered the following day, all to an incredibly high standard.”

A wood fibre and lime system is around £3,000 per wall and takes about five days. PIR is usually £2,300 to £3,000 over three to four days where the wall is suitable. Tall villa walls can cost more, and you get a written quotation after a free home visit.
Do I need a damp proof course before insulating?
Not necessarily. Many damp problems in Victorian houses come from cement pointing, blocked air bricks, leaking gutters or condensation, not from a missing damp proof course. I look at the cause before anything else.
Will insulation hide damp and make it worse?
Not if the cause is fixed first and the right system is used. That is why I do a moisture check and usually choose a breathable build-up on old walls.
How thick will the insulation be?
Typically 20mm to 80mm per wall including plaster. Wood fibre tends towards the thicker end; in big villa rooms that is rarely noticed.
Can you repair old lime plaster too?
Yes. Lime plastering and repairs are part of what I do, priced with a written quotation after a visit.
